Walking or hiking. Meet other local people who are interested in walking or hiking for fitness and learning about San Francisco's history, including its movie history. This walking group is unique. We put health 1st and history 2nd. We keep our group together. We go on many different urban walks, in the best areas, that vary greatly in distance, stair climbing, and amount of history facts. We walk at a leisurely pace to enjoy the scenery. Sometimes at a walk's end we have an optional dinner tog …
This is a book club for history enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. We read and then discuss different books that are rooted in or inspired by history in all its shapes and colors. Fiction and non-fiction, both scholarly and popular. Stories that re-create the past. Journalists who tell us "what happened". Interpreters who openly argue a point of view or seek to illuminate the present through the past. We meet every 4 weeks or so in the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods of San Franci …

These mission-to-mission walks are open to all who enjoy nature, art, history. And walking. Though many of the walks are between 16-22 miles, they're set at a reasonable pace and are easy to train for. Why'd You Start the Group? Long story short: In March 2011 I walked 330 miles of the Camino de Santiago, a 1,200 year-old pilgrimage route in Spain. I lived with very little for 3 weeks. I experienced nature, art, and history. I met people from all around the world on the same simple quest - to …

Poetry, short stories, plays, novels, history, philosophy, science, not necessarily in that order, classics that are worthy of discussion, current and past, western and non-western, these are the works we discuss. The discussion is what is most important. We discuss these works to enlarge our understanding of the ideas that shape our culture and gain a deeper appreciation for what it means to be human.

… We also may stroll through art or cultural festivals in the area, as well as join in on guided history walks. Occasionally I lead walks in San Francisco. I welcome your suggestions for activities! Please note that I am not a power walker: I stop to smell the flowers, admire the view, and take photographs on my walks and hikes. If you are looking for a strenuous workout, then this group is not for you! If, however, you are like me, and you prefer the relaxation, gentle exercise, and conversatio …

I started this group to help people to learn about photography and to be more comfortable with their cameras. We meet at the Bayside Cafe in Sausalito and spend about an hour discussing the principles of photography and helping folks to get familiar with their cameras. Then we explore the colorful and interesting Houseboat community of Sausalito, snapping photos and learning some of the history of Sausalito. There is a $60 donation for the three hour class and tour; a 50% discount for Meetup subs …

… Many of the differences in doctrine and practice between different schools of Buddhism are products of culture and history more than anything inherent to what the Buddha taught. His successors continued to develop the Dharma, creating new schools of thought and practice. In the current era, we have an unparalleled access to the teachings of many schools of Buddhism, even extinct ones lost in previous centuries but surviving in texts and artifacts of their time. Rather than enshrining any one tra …

Going out on the Bay in a comfortable safe boat: teaching a little sailing, talking a little history and really leaving the hardworld behind, if only for a short time. We can keep it casual or maybe do a Corinthian Yacht Club Friday Night "Beer Can" race- in Tiburon; a very low-key event, and I don't try to win, just stay with the tail of the fleet.. Barbecue on the club deck after.

How many of the following have you noticed? - Some persistent difficulties in life cannot be explained by one's personal history. - Some people "replay" their parent's lives, especially in the type of painful limitations they experience. - Some families seem to have way too many tragedies. - There are emotional patterns that can't be healed with one-on-one therapy. - There are dimensions of the soul that most spiritual approaches cannot touch or account for. … All have common features of worn or abandoned buildings, rusted equipment, signs of past industry and forgotten history, graffiti-tagged, etc. For the uninitiated it could look like old gritty places ready for the bulldozer, but for us there is beauty there ready to be captured in film/pixels. There are some risks exploring these places but because of the various abilities of the members the risks here are minimum as long as you follow the host’s lead. Those who don't, who stray from the grou …
